8 Ways Bartenders are Like God

Bartenders aren’t just your average folks. Anyone who can put up with that much insanity on a daily basis must be pretty damn powerful, right?
Kind of like a god.
GodClosed.jpg
Allow me to be clearer: Bartenders aren’t all-mighty deities whose hobbies consist of floating in the sky, sleeping with their sister and chucking magical lightning bolts at mountain-sized monsters (I’m looking at you, Zeus).
But you know what bartenders are? Patient. Knowledgeable. Honest. Creative. And goddamn mystical.
Here are eight ways bartenders are just like God:

1. They’re all-knowing.

Ask your bartender anything about drinks, nightlife or that weird guy trying to hit on you and they’ll give you the honest-to-God (pun!) answer you’re looking for. Bartenders know everything there is to know about people and problems. And the drunker you are, the more unsettlingly impressive their omniscience becomes.

2. They’re creators.

God is said to have created the universe in six days, but bartenders can create far-more-elaborate concoctions in, get this, less than five minutes. The ingredients are basically the same, too: You got your water and your forbidden fruits and a load of stuff on the rocks (OK, promise, no more terrible puns).

3. They look out for you.
If you’ve ever been a tad too drunk and tried to order another drink, your bartender probably said something like, “Dude, I’m gonna have to cut you off now.” And just like God or a guardian angel, your bartender’s got your back. While some bartenders may be annoyed by your antics, most care deeply about your well-being—or at least enough to know it definitely ain’t your time to die.

4. They talk to you when you’re feeling down.

Some people turn to God during a crappy day; others head to the bar to discuss their innermost problems with a local bartender. At least with bartenders, you know they’re there to give you some one-on-one attention and relevant advice. Poor God, on the other hand, has to listen to a billion prayers at once.

5. You can confess your sins to them.
Bars don’t look a thing like confessionals, but they’ve likely witnessed more confessions than even the oldest of Catholic churches. Instead of holing yourself up in a claustrophobic box, spill your guts at a bar. Trust me, bartenders have heard it all. Listening to people’s regrets is pretty much written in their job description.

6. They have many followers.
On Twitter, that is.  And people will travel all across town to see them. Yes bartenders have plenty of followers.

7. They’re always in the same place doing the same old stuff.
Kind of like how gods have been incessantly depicted bopping around the clouds for the past few thousand years, bartenders are always exactly where you expect them to be—slouched behind a bar, mixing drinks and gossiping about that weird guy who tried to hit on you earlier.

8. They’re wrathful.

Whatever you do, don’t get on your bartender’s bad side. Whether you’re a professional asshole or are simply dealing with a typical bad day, bartenders aren’t required to take crap from anyone, and that most certainly includes you. If you continue your shitty behavior, expect some pretty extreme punishment, Moses-style. Yep—I’m talking permanent exile.

Getting Dating Advice From the Bartender

Being at your local bar may not be what you consider an ideal place to find love. But someone is there who knows a lot when it comes to dating – your bartender.
Couples Dancing And Drinking At Evening Party
The people serving the drinks sees and hears it all, and knows what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to pick ups and hook ups.  Your bartender can be a great resource for getting some dating advice and here’s why.

1. Bartenders work in Dating Hot-Spots
Yes, you may have been in the same bar with the bartender plenty of times.  However, the advantage the bartender has is that they are sober while you’re not.  They are also there a lot longer and get the chance to see people flirting with and otherwise trying to pick up people all the time.  Essentially, they know what works and what doesn’t work.  They can tell you the ways to help make sure you don’t go home alone and get the person you are attracted to.

2.  Bartenders can be Match-Makers

Bartenders know the places to go to find singles.  They might also know a group of people that it might be worth you getting to know and where you could find someone with common interests.  They also oftentimes get invited out to exclusive events or after-hours events, of which you may get to hear about by asking them for advice or getting to know them.

3.  Bartenders been on a Few Dates
In their line of work, bartenders get hit on all the time.  As such, they usually have quite a bit of experience under their belt when it comes to dating.  As such, they can usually give some sound advice as to what does and doesn’t work when it comes to dating.  They may have even gone out with someone who frequents that particular bar which didn’t work out, but they feel might be a good fit for you.

4.  Bartenders are Rockstars

Asking someone for dating advice is, of course, flattering.  So, asking your bartender can help earn you points with them; points which translate to you being prioritized during busy crowds.  Getting in good with the bartender is always a good thing which can earn you some benefits.  If you build a strong enough rapport, they may even introduce you to one of their own friends or available customers!  Again, remember that bartenders run with large social circles, so it’s definitely a possibility!
Sure, you can search the web for dating advice, but most of that is either trying to sell a book, or ends up being things that sound good in theory, but don’t exactly work out the same way in the real world.  Bartenders tend to have hands-on experience – something far more valuable than what looks good on paper.  So, give it a try!  See what advice your local bartender has for you next time you’re out.  You just might be surprised.

Pros and Cons of Bartending vs. Serving

Having been both a bartender and a server (I’m currently a combination of both), I can’t say one is necessarily better than the other.  But, there are definitely pros and cons to weigh up on either side.
There are some bartenders who would never serve, and vice versa. This is a subject a lot people will have lots of opinions on. So, if you’re in the rare position of choosing your role in a new place, or have been offered a change in your current job, read on for some thoughts on each of these vital front of house positions.

SERVING

Ah, serving.  Almost everybody does it at least once. It truly is a great way to earn some cash while still pursuing other goals. However, just like bartending, it can be a grueling job.
The Pros
You May Get to Leave Earlier
While bartenders often work until 4 in the morning, most serving jobs, at least in my experience, tend to have more normal hours.
Less Pressure
There can be a lot of pressure on bartending. You’re expected to create regulars, chit chat all day long, and hold down the fort should there be any issues. Sometimes serving can be a bit less emotionally taxing.
Flexible Schedule
Serving is one of the most flexible jobs out there. There’s always someone to cover you or extra shifts to pick up if you need the cash.
The Cons
Long, Long Hours
A server’s hours can be punishing. From doubles to “clopens”, this is definitely a role where you might be a bit (read: a lot) tired. Oh “clopens” are closing at work one day and opening the next day.
Less Money

Depending on the place, a server may make less money than their bartending counterparts. At the bar people throw cash at you like it’s going out of style. While the couple on a date at table 40 is not likely to do as much.
Less Respect
Now, this is absolutely not to say that servers don’t deserve all the respect in the world, because they do. But, it has been my experience that bartenders are more respected by both customers and management alike.

BARTENDING

It’s not all fast cash and a whirlwind social life.  Bartending is a tough job that’s not for the faint of heart, but it can come with many rewards.
The Pros
Show Me the Money

Bartenders can make bank. I know many that make more money than the professionals they’re serving during happy hour. If you can stomach the hours and stress, working behind the stick can be extremely lucrative.
A Social Job

Bartenders get to talk all day, every day. If you work in a place with great customers and staff, it can be the perfect job for all you social butterflies. You’ll also never want for friends, or a date for that matter.
Free Time During the Day

There’s nothing quite like running errands at 2pm on a Wednesday when the rest of the world is at work. When you have your days free it’s super easy to do things like schedule doctor’s appointments and work on any other non-restaurant related goals.
The Cons
Working Very Late
Yeah, having days free is great. But, if you’re working until 4am, you might just spend them sleeping. Shift work is hard. You’ll be fighting grogginess and fatigue so taking care of yourself is key.
It’s All on You

Sometimes it’s hard to be Ms. Personality all the time. When you’rE working behind the bar, you’re expected to not only be pleasant but actively engage with your customers. This can be tough if you’re having an off day.
People are Annoying

When you’re serving, it’s easy to walk away from a creepy customer or someone that won’t shut up. When you’re stuck behind the bar, it’s way harder to escape. You’ll see the same faces over and over again, some of which you may not love.
